The original property no longer met the needs of modern family living. Our brief was to maximise the site’s potential by creating a spacious, energy-efficient home with generous open-plan living areas, six bedrooms and high-quality finishes throughout.
The project involved extensive demolition, major structural alterations, a substantial two-storey rear extension, first-floor enlargement, a completely new roof structure, and a full redesign of the internal layout.
Delivering a project of this scale required significant engineering expertise. Extensive steelwork was installed to support the new structure, while temporary roofing systems protected the property throughout the construction programme, allowing work to continue safely in all weather conditions.
Large structural openings created bright, open living spaces, while new rooflights and carefully designed roof forms brought natural light deep into the home.
Internally, every room was redesigned.
The finished home now features spacious open-plan living and entertaining areas, a contemporary kitchen, dedicated home-working space, six generous bedrooms, modern bathrooms, new electrical and plumbing systems, energy-efficient heating, and premium fixtures and finishes throughout.
Projects of this complexity demand meticulous planning and coordination. Working closely with structural engineers, building control and specialist contractors, we carefully managed each phase to ensure the build progressed efficiently while maintaining the highest standards of quality.
Because elements of the original bungalow were retained during construction, maintaining weather protection was essential. Temporary roofing systems allowed major structural and roofing works to proceed while safeguarding the existing building and minimising programme delays.
Although much of the property is new, careful attention was paid to ensuring every element works together as a single, cohesive home. The extensions, roof design and external finishes blend seamlessly to create a property that feels purpose-built rather than extended.
The transformation is remarkable.
What was once an ageing bungalow is now a striking six-bedroom family home that offers over twice the living accommodation, contemporary architecture and a layout designed around modern family life.
The new open-plan living spaces connect beautifully with the garden, while the additional bedrooms and bathrooms provide flexibility for growing families. Combined with upgraded building services, improved energy efficiency and exceptional craftsmanship throughout, the project has created a home that will serve its owners for decades to come.
This project perfectly demonstrates Abbey Construction’s ability to deliver complex whole-home transformations, taking properties with untapped potential and turning them into exceptional modern homes.
